1. The oldest form of aviation<\/h2>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

Hot air balloons hold a real record. They are considered the very first successful technology for human flight. Although modern aviation is dominated by airplanes and helicopters, our journey into the sky began much earlier – back in 1783. <\/p>\n

That’s when French inventors Joseph and \u00c9tienne Montgolfier built a balloon out of silk and paper, which they filled with hot air from burning wool and straw.<\/p>\n

Their first public demonstration was held in front of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette at the Palace of Versailles – a major event. Fortunately, everything went very well. <\/p>\n

The balloon rose to an altitude of around 600 meters and traveled just over a mile, proving that one day humans could actually travel through the air. Just two months later, the first manned flight took place, marking the beginning of a new era in human exploration. <\/p>\n

Interestingly, hot air balloons were never really used for transportation or travel, which makes them a pioneering invention – but more as a foundation to build on, rather than an end goal.<\/p>\n

Almost from the beginning, hot air balloons have been about exploration, challenge and cross-country adventure. And yet the tradition has endured, and still has a strong following today. They remain a symbol of adventure and discovery. <\/p>\n

Just remember – every time you fly, you become part of a rich and proud tradition!<\/p>\n

2. Hot air technology began in ancient China<\/h2>\n

Although the Montgolfier brothers are credited with inventing the modern hot air balloon, the idea of using heated air for lift goes back much further – over 1,500 years earlier!<\/p>\n

In the 3rd century BC, the brilliant Chinese military strategist Zhuge Liang developed an ingenious aerial messaging system known as the Kongming lantern. These small paper lanterns were powered by a candle, which heated the air inside and made them rise. Military commanders attached coded messages to the lanterns and set them free, allowing allies to see them from miles away. <\/p>\n

Although originally a tool of war, lanterns quickly became cultural symbols and are still used today at festivals in China, Thailand and Taiwan – as symbols of hope, prosperity and wishes for the future.<\/p>\n

In many ways, these ancient lanterns were the first predecessors of hot air balloons – proof that the human dream of flying has very deep roots!<\/p>\n

3. Deadly love<\/h3>\n

Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Pil\u00e2tre de Rozier<\/a>, a pioneering French scientist, was the first person ever to ascend in a hot air balloon.<\/p>\n

On November 21, 1783, together with the Marquis d’Arlandes<\/a>, he made a historic flight over Paris, marking a significant milestone in aviation history. Tragically, Pil\u00e2tre de Rozier’s passion for flying led to his untimely death.<\/p>\n

In 1785<\/a>, during an attempt to cross the English Channel in a hybrid balloon combining hot air and hydrogen, the balloon caught fire and crashed. He thus became the first documented person to die in an aviation accident.<\/p>\n

4. Caught with your pants down<\/h3>\n

Not all balloon stories are great. In 1785, Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries were the first to fly across the English Channel in a hot air balloon. An impressive feat, especially considering that the first balloon pilot died trying to do just that. <\/p>\n

But their journey was close to disaster – and ended with an unexpected event at 3 000 feet…<\/p>\n

Shortly after take-off, they realized that the balloon was too heavy and quickly lost altitude over the icy water. In a desperate attempt to stay airborne, they started throwing everything out – sandbags, scientific equipment, even their own clothes! <\/p>\n

When they finally reached the coast of France, they flew over the countryside in nothing but their underwear. But they made history – and landed safely near Gu\u00eenes, France – proof that long-distance balloon travel was possible… even if it cost them some dignity.<\/p>\n

5. Champagne landings – A tradition in the sky<\/h4>\n

In the 18th century, hot air balloon pilots faced an unexpected problem – angry farmers<\/strong>! The sight of a huge, smoking balloon descending from the sky was often interpreted as a supernatural omen or threat. Some villagers even destroyed the balloons in a panic, convinced that they were evil spirits. <\/p>\n

So how do you win the hearts of scared people?<\/p>\n

The early balloonists had the solution: champagne! After landing, they started carrying bottles and offering a glass to nearby farmers – both as a sign of peace and to celebrate a successful journey together. <\/p>\n

This tradition has survived for more than 200 years<\/strong>. Even today, many commercial hot air balloon flights end with a toast of champagne <\/strong>– keeping this historic custom alive. Some pilots even recite a traditional balloon prayer<\/a>: <\/p>\n

“The winds have welcomed you with softness,
\nThe sun has blessed you with his warm hands,
\nYou have flown so high and so well,
\nThat God has laughed with you
\nAnd gently brought you back,
\nTo the loving embrace of Mother Earth.”<\/em><\/p>\n

flights – our flights in the Alps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of January this year, we had a great opportunity to take our balloons to the Alps and conduct a couple of breathtaking flights there. The Dolomites offer amazing views and landscapes, but at the same time they represent a rather demanding terrain for hot air balloon flights.<\/p>\n<h2>Flying over different mountain ranges is not the same<\/h2>\n<p>The Alps, thanks to the fact that they cover a really large area, allow us to fly in basically any direction, which distinguishes them from many other mountain ranges.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the wind in the Alps blows in an unfavorable direction, we can always change the take-off location to adapt to the given wind direction and thus provide ourselves with suitable potential landing sites.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Tatra Mountains – located in southern Poland, can only be crossed from south to north or from north to south. This usually means waiting for the right wind, which makes it difficult to find favorable conditions. Our colleagues from the Polish DreamBalloon branch, having traveled all over Poland, have tried several times to fly over Mount Tatra, but each time, despite beautiful weather, there was no suitable wind.<\/p>\n<h2>The views and the landing<\/h2>\n<p>The most spectacular are the flights over the highest and\/or rockiest parts of the mountains. We flew over the Dolomites. In that area there are often weather conditions that allow pilots to take off in the middle of the mountains, while landing, for example, in the warm climate zone of Italy! For example, after taking off within the much colder mountain area, we landed near warmer Venice. <\/p>\n<p>For slightly shorter flights, the pilot can choose one of the many large valleys between the peaks of the Alps as a landing site, such as the Belluno Valley, which we also happened to choose as one of our landing sites.<\/p>\n<h2>Difficulties and preparations<\/h2>\n<p>No matter how long you plan to fly or the distance you cover, you need to take into account the need to reach a suitable altitude – above 12 000 feet (about 3.7 km). This implies certain equipment requirements. For example, during each flight we are equipped with an oxygen breathing system (oxygen mask + cylinder). <\/p>\n<p>The balloon also undergoes various preparations – the pressure in the cylinders is increased with nitrogen; we provide a sufficient amount of gas, which should be enough for the planned time\/distance, and a little more. For this reason, the number of passengers is reduced accordingly – to be able to carry more gas and reduce the weight of the envelope.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the difference between such a flight and an (extra)ordinary passenger flight in our regular flying regions in Sweden?<\/h2>\n<p>Firstly, the flights in the Alps are scheduled to last at least 4 hours. There are no stopovers during this time, and you fly over the highest mountain peaks, so it’s more of an adventure for lovers of long flights with strong nerves.<\/p>\n<h2>12,000 feet above the Alps in January, 4 hours in the fresh air – how do we deal with such temperatures?<\/h2>\n<p>Contrary to what may seem like an obvious conclusion, pilots and passengers do not turn into ice cubes during the flight \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n<p>For example, the temperature at the start down at the ground was -5 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, at an altitude of 4,000 meters where we spent almost 4 hours, it was -20 degrees. <\/p>\n<p>However, it is important to remember that the sun is very strong at the top, which obviously affects the perceived temperature. Moreover, when we stand on the ground we feel the wind, but when we fly with its speed and direction – we do not. <\/p>\n<p>For this reason, if we fly over a peak where people are standing, they will be much colder than us, because they are affected by the wind, which we do not feel as much.<\/p>\n<h2>Are such flights dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p>Flying over high mountain ranges naturally requires much more preparation, piloting experience, but also humility. However, if we are careful and carry out the flight “according to the art”, we still consider it a relatively safe adventure. <\/p>\n<p>Pilots conducting such flights must demonstrate experience, appropriate knowledge, but also a good amount of self-control. The varying topography of the mountains can create unique flying conditions, even those such as turbulence. <\/p>\n<p>Turbulence in an airplane and in a balloon are two completely different experiences. In the mountains, turbulence can occur when we are flying at high speed and a high mountain section ends below us. In such a situation, when the wind slows down significantly, the air, instead of continuing to fly straight, “folds”. <\/p>\n<p>When we are in a balloon under turbulence, we feel the wind from all sides. The balloon starts to rock and can “swing” up to 30 degrees to each side. Then, as the flight altitude begins to decrease, the pilot tries to heat the air in the envelope with the burners, although at first it may seem that the balloon is not heating up at all (in fact, it heats up much more slowly), as it is quickly cooled by the many air currents within which it is located. These flights had almost unlimited visibility. <\/p>\n<p>The crew following the balloon also has plenty of attractions – they follow the balloon not on highways, like most travelers from point A to point B in this region, but through narrow mountain paths, sometimes passing almost through the peaks.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who are looking for something more exciting to fly, we sincerely Can we stand next to each other? <\/h2>\n<p>Absolutely! Boarding the balloon takes place immediately after the pilot gives the signal. So you can board together, one by one, and enjoy each other’s company during the flight. <\/p>\n<p>Usually we try to keep the weight on board evenly distributed on both sides, but it is never a problem or an obstacle for passengers to stand next to each other.<\/p>\n<h2>2. What can you see from above?<\/h2>\n<p>The view depends a lot on where we fly and which route we take. From the basket we can see forests, fields, cities and residential areas. Almost always you can see deer running, foxes, hares; horses, cows, sheep and sometimes even wild boars or wolves.<\/p>\n<h2>3. How high do we fly and can people with a fear of heights fly a balloon?<\/h2>\n<p>The flight altitude depends on several factors and is determined by the pilot. We usually fly at low to slightly higher altitudes (between 100m and 1000m) to show as many amazing perspectives and views from above as possible. Balloons take off softly and fly with the speed of the wind, so they do not reach high speeds (in that case the flight would not be carried out for safety reasons). The high barrier of the balloon basket and our trained balloon crew are helpful in overcoming any fears.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Can the family come and see\/photograph the balloon taking off?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, we are always happy when you invite your families and friends to the start. The more the merrier!<\/p>\n<h2>5. Flying in spring\/summer\/early fall – which one to choose?<\/h2>\n<p>Each season is unique and offers slightly different views. But a balloon flight is such an extraordinary experience that it’s hard for us to say which time is ‘better’. <\/p>\n<p>Spring and early fall are periods when flights are more available and even in the case of flight cancellations due to bad weather, there are usually more alternative dates available, so the chances of flying are better during these periods.<\/p>\n<h2>6. What happens after landing?<\/h2>\n<p>Immediately after the basket touches the ground, we all remain in the basket, even if the basket is already stable. Passengers leave the basket only after receiving clear information from the pilot (otherwise, if you quickly jump out, the pilot may be accidentally pulled away by the balloon, since the envelope is still filled with hot air, but without you the basket is too light to stay on the ground \ud83d\ude09). <\/p>\n<p>After a message from the pilot, the passengers leave the basket and we pack the balloon together. This is of course voluntary and you can participate, but you are absolutely not obliged to do so. However, it is a lot of “fun” and, in our experience, the majority of passengers are eager to participate. <\/p>\n<p>As the time for landing approaches, the pilot informs the ground crew, who follow the balloon and meet us at the landing site. We pack the balloon on the trailer and it’s time for all of us to celebrate the flight and the happy ending with some bubbles.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Is it noisy on board the balloon?<\/h2>\n<p>Mostly no, sometimes yes. Flying in a balloon is often so quiet that we can even hear the sounds of forests and fields that we fly over (often sounds of animals). When we fly over houses, families with children often wave at us, sometimes they say hello or ask questions – everything can be heard perfectly (of course, also depending on the flight altitude). It is both a calming experience, where we are very close to nature (we often see wild boars, wolves and other animals less common on earth). Only when the pilot uses the burners will there be louder sounds, but the sound is not annoying or intrusive in any way and occurs only for a moment.<\/p>\n<h2>8. I have a piece of land near the city. Can you fly from there? <\/h2>\n<p>Take-off sites are very carefully and precisely selected, taking into account many factors such as legal restrictions, decisions by aviation authorities, current forecasts and weather conditions, wind direction and the availability of potential landing sites in the vicinity of a given location.<\/p>\n<p>The launch site must also meet a number of requirements. For example, it must have appropriate road access, be at a safe distance from power lines, etc. <\/p>\n<p>If you booked a whole balloon for a private flight, we can consider using the specified location, but in addition to meeting all the requirements mentioned, successful agreements and approval from the aviation authorities would also be required. Therefore, we can consider it, but cannot guarantee that we will use that particular location. <\/p>\n<p>In the case of group flights, the take-off site is chosen each time by the pilot who, before the flight, analyzes the current weather conditions, wind direction and the availability of landing sites.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Why are you canceling my flights?<\/h2>\n<p>We only cancel flights for safety reasons. If there is precipitation, the possibility of storms or strong winds, the pilot will decide, taking into account the most current weather forecasts, whether or not to carry out the flight. <\/p>\n<p>However, it happens that after the flight is canceled, we receive calls from passengers saying that “the weather is beautiful”, “what is the wind”, etc. This does not happen often, but there have been situations where, despite the seemingly good weather, safety reasons did not allow us to carry out a flight.<\/p>\n<h2>10. Do we take photos\/videos of the flights?<\/h2>\n<p>At the moment we do not offer photo or video services.<\/p>\n<h2>11. How to get in and out of the balloon<\/h2>\n<p>There are several holes (‘windows’) in the basket of the balloon, which act as a step to help you ‘jump’ into the basket.<\/p>\n<h2>12. Will I be able to participate in the preparations for the balloon launch?<\/h2>\n<p>Absolutely! We encourage passengers to participate both in the preparation for the balloon launch and in packing up the balloon afterwards, to be honest, it’s a lot of fun! However, it is not an obligation – if you feel like it and want to, you are welcome to participate. The brothers organized a demonstration in front of Louis XVI and the royal family in the courtyard of the castle. The passengers on the first test flight were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. <\/p>\n<p>The balloon rose to about 600 meters, but the flight did not last long. Due to a hole in the envelope, the balloon landed after a short time in the Vaucresson forest. Fortunately, the animals were not harmed and were later hailed as heroes and lived in the grounds of the royal palace for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Military balloons<\/h2>\n<p>Hot air balloons were once used for military purposes such as reconnaissance and observation.<\/p>\n<p>There are many examples of the use of hot air balloons, especially since the First World War when military balloons were used by both sides in the conflict. Once you’re trained and licensed, it’s entirely possible for the average person to fly a hot air balloon – if you’re ready for a little adventure and a lot of responsibility.
